A Learning Session Built Into Your Service Call
The Idea Is Simple
When you book a service through Hometown Handywomen, you can add a Shadow a Pro session for an additional $30 per hour. Instead of disappearing while your handywoman works, you stay alongside her. She explains what she’s doing, why she’s doing it that way, and walks you through the knowledge you’d need to confidently handle it on your own next time.
It’s not a class or a workshop. It’s real work happening in your real home, with a real professional who walks you through every step as she goes. The shelves still get installed. The faucet still gets changed. The garden still gets planted. But by the end, you understand how it was done.
No other home services platform offers anything like this. It’s exclusive to Hometown Handywomen, and it’s one of the reasons our clients keep coming back.
Learning to Patch Drywall
Your handywoman repairs the hole in your hallway while showing you how to prep the surface, apply compound, sand it smooth, and match the paint. Next time a doorknob punches through, you've got it.
Understanding Your Garden
While designing and planting your raised beds, your handywoman explains soil composition, sun mapping, companion planting, and seasonal maintenance — so you can keep it thriving all year.
Changing a Light Fixture
Your handywoman swaps your dated kitchen light while walking you through how to safely cut power, identify wiring, connect the new fixture, and test it. The next fixture? You might handle it yourself.
Three Steps to Learning Something New
Adding Shadow a Pro to your booking takes one click. The rest happens naturally.
Add It to Your Booking
When you request a service, check the "I'd like to learn" option. We'll match you with a handywoman who has opted into the Shadow a Pro program and is comfortable teaching while she works.
Learn While She Works
Your handywoman completes the job as usual, but explains each step along the way. Ask questions, watch techniques up close, and build the knowledge you need to understand how your home works.
Take Your New Skills Forward
After the job, you'll receive a follow-up email with a summary of what you learned and any tips your handywoman wanted to share. The next time something similar comes up, you'll know what to do — or at least what's involved.
The job always comes first. Shadow a Pro sessions are designed so that the teaching happens alongside the work, not instead of it. Your handywoman’s priority is always completing the job to the highest standard. The learning is a bonus, not a compromise.

More Than a Service Call
Shadow a Pro changes the relationship between homeowner and home. Here’s what that feels like.
“I've lived in my apartment for six years and never hung anything heavier than a picture frame. After one Shadow a Pro session, I installed floating shelves in my kitchen by myself the following weekend.”
“My handywoman didn't just plant my garden — she taught me what each plant needs and why she placed them where she did. I've kept everything alive for three months now, which is a personal record.”
“I'm a single mom and I used to call someone every time something broke. Now I've fixed a leaky faucet and patched two holes in the wall myself. My daughter thinks I'm a superhero.”
When Learning Leads to Something Bigger
Sometimes a Shadow a Pro Session Reveals the Real Project
You book a session to learn about fixing a faucet — and realize the whole bathroom needs updating. You learn to patch a wall — and start thinking about knocking one down. When your project grows beyond handywoman scope, our Trusted Partners Directory connects you with women-owned licensed contractors, architects, and designers who share the same values you already trust. Every partner is personally interviewed for alignment before they’re listed.
Shadow a Pro FAQ
Do I have to participate in the work?
Not at all. Shadow a Pro is about learning through observation and explanation. You watch your handywoman work, ask as many questions as you want, and she walks you through every step. You're never expected to pick up a tool — you'll learn just as much by watching a pro and understanding the why behind the work.
Will the job take longer because of the teaching?
Shadow a Pro sessions may add a small amount of time depending on how many questions you ask, but most handywomen are skilled at explaining while working. The job gets done to the same standard — the explanation happens alongside the work, not after it.
Can I add Shadow a Pro to any service?
Shadow a Pro is available on any service where the handywoman has opted in. When browsing, you'll see a badge on listings that include the option. If you don't see it on a particular listing, the handywoman may not offer teaching for that specific service.
Is there a minimum booking length for Shadow a Pro?
All bookings on our platform have a 2-hour minimum, which works perfectly for Shadow a Pro. Two hours gives your handywoman enough time to do the work well and walk you through what she's doing, why she's doing it that way, and the knowledge you'd need to feel confident about your home.
Is Shadow a Pro covered by my handywoman’s insurance?
Shadow a Pro sessions happen during a normal booking, so they fall under the same general liability policy your handywoman carries, which we verify before every booking. The exact coverage depends on her policy, so ask her if you have questions.
What if my Shadow a Pro session reveals a project that's too big for a handywoman?
That happens more often than you'd think — and it's a good thing. Learning what's involved in a repair often clarifies what really needs to be done. If your project turns out to need a licensed contractor, architect, or engineer, your handywoman can connect you with our Trusted Partners Directory: a curated network of women-owned professionals who've been personally vetted for the same values you already trust from your Hometown Handywomen experience.
