Fewer Barriers to Start

We Took the Hassle Out of Getting Started

Most platforms expect you to figure out clients, payments, and marketing on your own. We handle those, and we point you to Thimble if you need a general liability policy.

Figure out insurance alone

Insurance, Made Simple

You carry your own general liability insurance. Already have a policy? Upload your certificate. Don't? Thimble (thimble.com) offers on-demand and monthly policies. We suggest $1M per occurrence / $2M aggregate, with Hometown Handywomen named as additional insured, and we verify it before your first job.

Do everything on your own

Your Business, Less Hassle

You run your own business; we take care of finding clients, payments and the Safety Meet & Greet.

Chase your own clients

Clients Come to You

Our platform matches you with clients in your area who need your specific skills. No cold calling, no advertising, no paying for leads.

The Bottom Line

You need one thing to join: your skills. Whether you're a carpenter, painter, gardener, organizer, or you can fix just about anything — if you're good at what you do, we want to hear from you. Everything else is on us.

How You Earn

Keep 100% of Your Rate. Plus Tips.

You set your own hourly rate. Clients pay your rate plus a Safety, Trust & Insurance Fee that supports safety, vetting (background checks and insurance verification), and support. That fee comes from the client — not from you.

Example: 4-Hour Interior Painting Job

Your hourly rate$65/hr
Job duration4 hours
Your earnings$260.00
Safety, Trust & Insurance Fee (paid by client, not you)$44.20 — client pays
Client total$304.20
You take home$260.00 + tips

You Set Your Rate

Choose an hourly rate that reflects your experience and your market. Most handywomen on our platform set rates between $50 and $95 per hour.

Fast, Reliable Payouts

Payments are processed through Stripe and deposited directly to your bank account. No waiting for checks, no chasing invoices.

Work When You Want

Set your own availability. Work mornings, evenings, weekends, or weekdays only. Accept the jobs you want and decline the ones you don't. You're always in control.

You Choose Your Jobs

Every booking comes as a request, not an assignment. Review the task description, the client's location, and the estimated duration. If it's a good fit, accept it. If not, decline with no penalty.

Environmentally Committed

A portion of every job goes to carbon removal through Stripe Climate. Your work helps the planet, not just your client’s home.

Women Supporting Women

Connect with other handywomen in your area, share advice, refer jobs to each other, and grow together as a community of skilled professionals.

Your Reputation Grows

Trusted Partners Referral

Your Clients Need Bigger Work? You're the Connection.

When a client mentions a kitchen remodel, a roof replacement, or any project beyond handywoman scope, you don't lose that relationship — you strengthen it.

How It Works

Our Trusted Partners Directory is a curated network of women-owned licensed contractors, architects, designers, and engineers — all personally vetted for alignment with Hometown Handywomen values. When you encounter a client who needs one of these professionals, you refer them through the platform.

Note it in the platform after a job when a client mentions a bigger project

We follow up automatically with a curated list of Trusted Partners who handle that type of work in their area

Your client stays in the trust ecosystem — connected to companies that share the same values you represent

You Become Their Go-To

When you help a client find the right general contractor for their kitchen remodel, you're not just the person who hung their shelves — you're the person they trust with their entire home. That means more repeat bookings, higher tips, and stronger word-of-mouth referrals for you.

All Trusted Partners are women-owned, licensed, insured, and personally interviewed for values alignment.

Handywoman FAQ

Questions We Hear Most

Do I need to be a licensed contractor?+

No. You run your own business as an independent contractor, and you carry your own general liability insurance (an existing policy, or one from Thimble: $1M per occurrence / $2M aggregate is what we suggest, with Hometown Handywomen named as additional insured). Depending on your location and the types of jobs you take, some specialized work may require specific certifications, but for the majority of our service categories, no license is needed.

How much can I realistically earn?+

It depends on your rate, your availability, and demand in your area. A handywoman working 25 hours per week at $65/hour would earn roughly $6,500/month before tips. Many handywomen work part-time around other commitments and still earn $2,000–$4,000/month. Shadow a Pro sessions add $20/hour on top of that.

What if I only have one or two specialties?+

That's perfectly fine. Many handywomen specialize in just one or two areas — painting only, garden design only, organization only. Clients search by category, so you'll be matched with people who specifically need what you offer.

Do I need to provide my own tools?+

In most cases, yes — you'll bring your own tools, just as any independent contractor would. Your listings will indicate what tools you bring so clients know what to expect. For larger jobs requiring specialized equipment, you and the client can discuss who provides what during the Safety Meet & Greet.

What is the Safety Meet & Greet?+

Before your first job with a new client, you'll have a brief, private video call in the app to introduce yourself, discuss the project, and make sure it's a good fit. This protects you too — you'll know exactly who you're working for and what the job involves before you arrive. After the first call, repeat bookings with the same client don't require another meeting.

Am I an employee or an independent contractor?+

You're an independent contractor (1099). You set your own rates, your own schedule, and you choose which jobs to accept. We don't tell you how to do the work — we connect you with clients, verify your insurance and run the platform. You'll receive a 1099 form for tax purposes at the end of each year.

Can I also work on other platforms?+

Absolutely. As an independent contractor, you're free to work on other platforms and take private clients as well. Many handywomen find that client matching, and transparent fee model make Hometown Handywomen their preferred platform — but the choice is always yours.

What happens when a client needs a bigger project than I handle?+

You refer them to our Trusted Partners Directory — a curated network of women-owned licensed contractors, architects, and designers who've been personally vetted for values alignment. Just note it in the platform after your job, and we'll automatically follow up with your client. You stay their trusted advisor, and they stay in the Hometown Handywomen ecosystem for the bigger work too.
