Built by a Woman Who Does the Work

Hometown Handywomen started with a simple belief: hiring someone to work in your home should feel as safe and personal as asking a trusted neighbor for help.

Our Story

Alex, Founder
Cold Spring, New York

I Had the Skills All Along

When I separated from my husband of 18 years, I found myself — for the first time — a single woman who needed to hire a stranger to help me move into a new rental home. I used a gig platform, and I felt firsthand the vulnerability of letting someone I'd never met into my space. It was unsettling in a way I hadn't expected.

That experience stayed with me. But the real spark came a few months later, when I was trying to figure out how to support myself after 18 years as a stay-at-home mom. My landlord approached me about a gardening job because he'd seen my skills — and suddenly, it all clicked. I realized I'd been building toward this my entire life without knowing it.

I grew up in a family where we fixed things ourselves. I had spent decades tending homes — painting, organizing, maintaining, building. I had real, marketable skills. And I knew I wasn't alone. There are thousands of women like me: skilled, reliable, and looking for fair work that fits their lives.

And on the client side, my own experience taught me something I couldn't ignore. If I felt vulnerable — a confident, capable woman — then millions of other people feel it too. Single mothers, elderly women living alone, people in marginalized communities — they deserve to feel safe when someone comes to their door. That's not a luxury. It should be the baseline.

That's why I'm building Hometown Handywomen™ — a home services platform based in Cold Spring, New York, that connects homeowners with skilled women for home repairs, gardening, painting, yard work, organization, smart home setup, and more. Every handywoman is vetted. Every handywoman carries her own verified general liability insurance. And every first visit starts with a personal introduction — because safety isn't a feature. It's the foundation.

What We Believe

Safety Isn't a Feature. It's the Foundation.

The Safety Meet & Greet™, verified general liability insurance, and all-women network exist because your comfort in your own home is non-negotiable.

Collaboration, Not Condescension

We work with you, not above you. Your vision matters. Your questions are welcome. If you want to learn how, we'll teach you.

Workers Deserve to Keep What They Earn

Our Safety, Trust & Insurance Fee is charged to the client. Your handywoman keeps 100% of her rate plus tips. Always.

Empowerment Through Knowledge

Shadow a Pro exists because knowing how your home works gives you power over your own environment.

Our Mission & Vision

Why We Exist

Our Mission

Our mission is to cultivate a safe and nurturing sanctuary in your home through the skilled hands of handywomen dedicated to bringing the joy and beauty of your unique vision to life.

Every decision we make — from the Safety Meet & Greet to the way we structure our fees — is guided by this mission. We're building something that doesn't exist anywhere else: a home services platform where safety, warmth, and craftsmanship come first.

Our Vision

A world where every homeowner can find a skilled, trusted woman to help with anything their home needs — and where every woman with a craft has a fair platform to share it.

We're starting with a soft launch in the Hudson Valley (our home base in Cold Spring, NY), expanding into the NYC Metro area and Fairfield County, CT. Our goal is to prove that this model works — that clients want it, handywomen thrive in it, and the economics sustain it — and then bring it to communities across the country.

These aren't aspirations on a poster. They're how we evaluate every handywoman, vet every Trusted Partner, and make every business decision.

What Sets Us Apart

More Than a Platform

Hometown Handywomen isn't just a different app. It's a different philosophy for how home services should work.

TRUST ECOSYSTEM

A Trust Ecosystem, Not a Marketplace

From the handywoman who hangs your shelves to the general contractor who remodels your kitchen, every professional in the Hometown Handywomen network has been personally vetted for the same values: quality, safety, collaboration, and environmental care. Our Trusted Partners Directory extends this trust to licensed contractors, architects, designers, and engineers for bigger projects.

EARNINGS

Zero Barriers, Full Earnings

Handywomen bring their skills and run their own business. The platform handles client matching, payments, the Safety Meet & Greet and insurance verification. They carry their own general liability insurance and keep 100% of their rate plus tips.

WOMEN IN TRADES

Women Supporting Women in Trades

Only 2.5% of skilled tradespeople in the U.S. are women. Hometown Handywomen is building a platform where that changes — where women with craft skills can earn a real living, where clients can find women professionals without searching, and where the next generation of tradeswomen can see a path forward.

SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability by Default

Every job is an opportunity to make a better choice — recycled materials, eco-friendly supplies, waste reduction, energy-efficient recommendations. Environmental responsibility isn’t a marketing line. It’s built into how our handywomen and Trusted Partners operate.
